Brussels, 19/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - President of the Regions, Albert Bore, has approved the proposal to set up a Europeans Fund for natural disasters (see p 8). He is calling on local and regional organisations to be involved in the management of subsidies awarded by this Fund. The President of the Committee explains that given that, "local and regional organisations are active on the ground in managing responses to disasters, a tripartite approach, combining European, national and local or regional action would be the best way of us ensuring that aid is used in a well targeted way". Albert Bore has written to the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, on the subject. He points out in a press statement that in 2000 the Committee asked for the creation of such a fund. Like Commissioner Barnier on Wednesday, he is calling for prevention to be developed (EUROPE yesterday p 8).
