Prodi undertakes to pay out Community aid swiftly

Brussels, 18/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Romano Prodi and Pierre Buyoya had an exchange of views on the political, economic and social situation in Burundi. The president of the European Commission and the president of Burundi "showed concern at the continued violence, due to the two organisations that never signed-up to the Arusha Agreements", says a Commission press release, stipulating that the rapid conclusion of negotiations that resumed in Dar es Salam on 19 September were regarded of the greatest importance to avoid the transition process being placed back into question. President Prodi assured President Buyoya of the Commission's support and his personal undertaking to implement pending Community aid as swiftly as possible. Commissioner Poul Nielson, who attended the talks, said he was prepared to speed up the payment of Community aid, the amount of which currently pending is 150 million euro, including humanitarian aid.
