Elseneur, 30/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - The EU15 Foreign Ministers, who met on Friday and Saturday in Elseneur for their informal "Gymnich" meeting, were to prepare a common position on US requests concerning the International Criminal Court. A decision could be taken during the General Affairs Council on 30 September. The European position should be specified after a meeting of lawyers from the Member States on 4 September in Brussels and a meeting with the United States on the fringe of the United Nations General Assembly session on 12 September in New York. The aim is to find an "inventive solution" that takes US positions into account without weakening the Court's international powers, noted one European diplomat at the opening of the meeting. It is not a question of linking the question of EU enlargement to that of the Court, said Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller before the meeting. The candidate countries may, if they wish, "await our common position", he said regarding the conclusion of an agreement between Romania and the United States. The ministers also took stock of the timetable of work for enlargement by the European Councils in Brussels and Copenhagen and of the future EU borders. They planned to speak, on Saturday, on the question of Iraq and the main line proposals of the Danish Presidency for peace in the Middle East.
