Brussels, 25/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided not to raise objections to granting aid in favour of BAE Berliner Batteriefabrik and its subsidiary MODAC, two German enterprises that manufacture and sell industrial batteries. The aid, notified in May 2002, provides for the granting of rescue aid to BAE and its subsidiary by the Land of Berlin, in the form of a loan of EUR 1 022 000. The Commission considers that the aid meets the criteria set out in the guidelines for rescue and restructuring aid. The Commission can approve rescue aid under these guidelines as one-off support to an ailing company during the time necessary for developing a restructuring or liquidation plan. Furthermore, the aid must consist of liquidity help in the form of either loan guarantees or loans bearing normal commercial interest rates and must be the strict minimum to keep the firm in business during a period of no longer than six months. This period can be prolonged up to 12 months if a restructuring plan is in line with the Community guidelines on aid for rescuing and restructuring.
