Brussels, 25/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission plans to grant humanitarian aid of EUR 3.8 million to displaced persons who, after nineteen years of conflict between separatist Tamils and the government of Sri Lanka, are to return to their homes in the northern and north-eastern parts of the country, following the ceasefire signed in February. A Commission press release states that, while the peace is still fragile, some 100,000 displaced persons inside Sri Lanka out of 800,000 decided to return home during the first months of the year and that other returns are planned, if the ceasefire holds. Union aid is mainly intended for the rehabilitation of shelter and housing, water supplies, improved sanitation and access to basic medical services.
