New York Quartet meeting on Tuesday

Brussels, 12/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The "Quartet" group of US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, the High Representative of the European Union, Javier Solana and the Russian Foreign Affairs Minister, Igor Ivanov, will be meeting on 16 July in New York in an extension of their emissaries' meeting on 2 July in the Middle East. The Quartet meeting will be followed by a dinner Chaired by the Secretary General of the United Nations and at which Foreign Affairs Ministers from Egypt, Jordan and possibly Saudi Arabia will attend. Although the White House continues to favour a strategy that is essentially based on reforming the Palestinian Authority, the European Union's vision, shared by Russia, consists in pushing forward both institutional reform as well as the political security process. The EU considers it essential to now find ways of giving an operational character to the political process that must ultimately end in the peaceful co-existence of the two States. At the same time, reform should provide, together with logistical and political support, the necessary structures of a future Palestinian State. A co-operation strategy to guarantee the security of Israelis and Palestinians is also planned.
