Brussels, 12/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Commission and the Enlargement Commissioner have decided to postpone their visit to Ankara pending a more stable political situation. Romano Prodi and Günter Verheugen were to be in Turkey on 18 and 19 July, but, given the avalanche of resignations within the Turkish government, including that of Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, the visit has been postponed by common accord with the Turkish authorities, explains the European Commission. The visit will be rescheduled "as soon as possible". The Commission said in a press release that the "European Commission President Romano Prodi has been following events in Turkey closely and notes that the political situation is evolving rapidly. He has conveyed to the Turkish authorities his confidence that the country will continue on the path of political and economic reform, in keeping with its status as an EU candidate. These reforms are strongly supported by the European Union and will be at the heart of the discussions during his planned visit to Turkey".
