Brussels, 04/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - Adopting in Strasbourg on Thursday the report by Elspeth Attwool (ELDR, UK) on Member States' violations of Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) rules in 2000, the European Parliament recommended that a uniform system of minimum penalties be established throughout the EU for violations of the CFP in order to make fishermen more confidence about the basic principle of equal treatment. The Commission was invited to present its 2001 report as soon as possible into violations of CFP rules (which should have been adopted before 1 June 2002) and to consider objective classification and description criteria for the violation of rules and for penalties. The European Parliament adopted the report by Danish ELDR MEP Niels Busk noting that it is eagerly awaiting proposals on ship inspections and controls that the Commission will be adopting as part of the process of reforming the CFP.
