ECHO willing to provide humanitarian aid after earthquake

Brussels, 26/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - Since the earthquake on Saturday in Iran (province of Qazvin), the Commission has been in contact with the Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies (IRCS) to assess humanitarian aid needs. On Saturday, its humanitarian office, ECHO, had prepared an immediate emergency aid decision, but the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has already met the most pressing needs with the despatch of a rescue team from Teheran. The Commission stresses in a press release that ECHO continues to monitor the situation, and is willing to provide the disaster-struck population with necessary aid in the form of housing rehabilitation, provision of drinking water and other basic needs.
