Promoting core labour standards

Brussels, 26/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - In adopting the report of Socialist, Marie-Hélène Gillig on the Commission's communication on core labour standards (CLS: freedom of association, abolition of forced labour, non-discrimination and abolition of child labour) and a global system of governance, Parliamentary committee seeking an integrated approach on EU policies. It is calling on Member States and candidate countries to support ILO action (ratifying its Conventions and supporting its inspection control instruments of violation of CLS etc, and for the EU to insert clauses on respecting CLS in co-operation with third countries. In the perspective of multi-lateral negotiations with the WTO, MEPs are calling on the Commission, council and Member States to define a common position on core labour standards.
