Brussels, 19/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of European Churches (CEC), which groups over 120 churches of Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Catholic tradition and some forty organisations of all European countries, presented its contribution to the European Convention. It stressed that: "the values of peace, justice, reconciliation, solidarity and sustainability (…) should be benchmarks for testing the results of the Convention". It thus hopes, above all, that the social and environmental dimensions will be given weight and significance over a free market economy, and that the civil society will be "consulted as a right" in developing European Union policies. The place of the Churches and their relations with the States must remain the concern of Member States, but the CEC would welcome recognition of the religious and spiritual foundations of Europe in the preamble to a Community constitutional text.
