Reform of fisheries policy, EU/Latin America Summit, cartels in the automotive sector, internal security, shipbuilding, gender equality, CAP, budget

Brussels, 24/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The mini-session of the European Parliament, in Brussels next week, will begin with a Commission communication on the common fisheries policy (for the disputes raised over the delay with which the proposal was presented and the mutation of the Commission's Director General, see EUROPE of 17 May, p.17). The EP will then have a debate on the EU/Latin America Summit of 17 May in Madrid (see EUROPE of 18 May, pages 4/5 and 9/10, of 22 May pages 12 and 13, and of 23 May pages 14 and 15), and on the Konrad report on the vertical agreements and cartels in the automotive sector (see EUROPE of 6/7 May, p.15). Thereafter, there will be joint discussions on several reports concerning internal security, and, notably, the funding of Europol, questions to the Commission by the PES and EPP-ED on shipbuilding (see EUROPE of 8 May, p. 12 on the European Commission's report), two reports on Agenda 2000 (CAP) and a report on gender equality in jobs. Here is the detailed agenda:

Wednesday 29 May (15.00 to 20.00 hrs; 21.00 to 24.00 hrs)

Commission Communication on the reform of the common fisheries policy;

Joint discussion on the reports by Cerdeira Morterero (Portuguese, PES) on the Spanish initiative of creating a network of points of contact for national authorities responsible for private safety, Sousa Pinto (Portuguese PES) on the Spanish initiative of creating a European institute of police studies, Stockton (British Conservative) on the Spanish initiative of creating a European network for the protection of prominent people, Deprez (Belgian, EPP) on the Belgian and Spanish initiative of amending the convention on the creation of Europol and the protocol on Europol's privileges and immunities, and the Belgian initiative concerning the adaptation of the basic pay of Europol's staff and the allocations and indemnities due to them (in all cases, consultation on a single reading);

Joint discussion on the reports by Duff (British Liberal) on the reform of the EP's rules of procedure regarding parliamentary immunity and McCormick (British Green/EFA) on the immunity of MEPs elected in Italy;

Howitt report (British Labour) on the Green Paper on the social liability of companies;

Joint discussion on the reports by Fiori (Italian, EPP) on the interim assessment of the reform of the CMO in the framework of Agenda 2000 and Rodriguez Ramos (Spain, PES) on rural development in the framework of Agenda 2000, interim assessment in EU and candidate countries

Korhola report (Finnish, EPP-ED) on the Council's common position concerning the directive repealing that of 1993 on public access to information over the environment (co-decision, second reading);

Lannoye report (Belgian Green) on the Commission's report on the evaluation of active substances of pharmaceutical products;

Hautala Report (Finnish Green) on amending the directive on gender equality in access to work, training and working conditions (co-decision, third reading);

Lange report (German, PES) on the amended proposal to the directive on certain elements of two or three wheeled motor vehicles (co-decision, third reading);

Myller report (Swedish, PES) on the decision establishing a community action programme for the environment 2001-2009 (co-decision, third reading).

Thursday 30 May

Second reading of the amending and supplementary budget No.2 for 2002;

Redondo Jimenez report (Spanish, EPP-ED) on the introduction of a quota scheme for the production of potato starch.
