Mr Solana condemns Kosovan resolution on territorial integrity of the province

Brussels, 24/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, CFSP High Representative, together with the Spanish Presidency, condemned the resolution adopted on Thursday by the Kosovo Parliament. The resolution ignores the border demarcation agreement signed in February 2001 by Yugoslavia and Macedonia. Michael Steiner, the Head of the UN Mission for Kosovo (MINUK) immediately annulled the resolution.

"I totally support Michael Steiner's decision to declare null and void the resolution of the Kosovar Parliament on the protection of the territorial integrity of Kosovo, stated Javier Solana in a forceful affirmation of his support for the agreement signed by Belgrade and Skopje. The High Representative declared that any interference with the work of MINUK officials would seriously diminish the legitimacy of the new political institutions. He also pointed out that the Kosovar authorities do not have the remit for dealing with issues that fall under the authority of the international community. Mr Solana concluded that, "Only close co-operation between the international community, countries in the region and local politicians…would resolve the numerous problems that Kosovo has to face up to".
