Brussels, 22/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Internal Market/Consumers/Tourism Council unanimously adopted, on 21 May, a resolution that sets out the actions to be implemented to not only develop tourism in the European Union but also allow it to face up to ever fiercer competition from other destinations (see also EUROPE of 18 May, p.11). Given the lack of Community policy in this sector of activity, the text recommends an approach involving all players. In this respect, the annual forum on tourism will be organised and the attributions of the advisory committee on tourism will be extended. In the aim of developing sustainable tourism, the resolution also provides for facilitating and supporting the networking of bodies at every level specialised in analysis of the sector, such as assuring the correct use of financial and non-financial instruments of the EU activated in its favour. Finally, the text provides for the definition and diffusion of indicators allowing the quality of tourist destinations and services to be followed up as well as the promotion of the ethical dimension of tourism.
