Brussels, 22/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - Czech Prime Minister Milos Zeman is to be in Brussels on Thursday and Friday where he will have meetings with Commission President Romano Prodi and Commissioner Günter Verheugen (enlargement) as well as with EU High Representative for CFSP Javier Solana and NATO Secretary General George Robertson. Mr Zeman's visit takes place at a tricky time when the debate on the Benes Decrees and their possible impact on the Czech Republic's membership process is intensifying. It comes after the declarations by German Interior Minister Otto Schily calling for abolition of the decrees, similar demands made last weekend by the Minister-President of Bavaria and candidate to the Chancellery Edmund Stoiber, and the highly controversial debate at the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (see p.12). Just a few weeks from general elections in the Czech Republic on 14/15 June, Mr Zeman also hopes to be briefed on the general state of progress of accession negotiations for his country and on the Commission's preparatory work with a view to drafting the next regular report on his country, expected for October this year.
