Strasbourg, 22/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - Approving its rapporteur, Joaquim Miranda (GUE, Portugal) on the European Commission's communication "Building an effective partnership with the United Nations in the fields of Development and Humanitarian Affairs", the European Parliament confirmed its hope that the EU would play a more active role in the UN programmes and that the Member States would substantially strengthen their coordination within the UN (see summary of the report in EUROPE of 9 May, p.16). The plenary adopted an amendment by Liberals Jan Mulder and Marieke Sanders-ten-Holte noting the efforts deployed by the Commission to improve control and transparency of funds allocated to international organisations, and calls on the Commission to provide it with a regular qualitative and quantitative assessment of the use of funds intended for the UN and its agencies.
