Strasbourg, 22/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption last week in Strasbourg of a compromise resolution by several groups on the World Food Summit (FAO) to be held in Rome from 10 to 13 June, the European Parliament approved amendments by the Greens/EFA Group which strengthen the initial text. The Greens, however, consider the final resolution is still not bold enough, and above all note that, five years after the first World Summit on Food, the aim to cut the number of people who are under fed by half by the year 2010 is still far from being achieved. Be this as it may, the Parliament mainly requests that: - emphasis be placed on combating malnutrition and food insecurity; - an end be put to exports to LDC of pesticides whose use is banned in Europe; - and the EU conclude fishing agreements only when these agreements are compatible with the food security of local populations.
