GENERAL NEWS / (eu) ep/e-democracy

22/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the initiative of Italian Radical Marco Cappato, 55 MEPs from the EPP-Ed, Socialist, Liberal, Greens, United Left and non-attached groups signed a proposal of resolution on "e-democracy" and "European e-citizenship" in which they call for the treaties to be amended so that, above all: - all public meetings of the EU's institutions and of their bodies shall be broadcast live and filed in archives on the Internet; - every citizen can fully enjoy his rights of European citizenship (e.g. vote for the EP, complaints to the Ombudsman, access to the European Court of Justice, petitions to EP) and also through the Internet, according to "identification systems compliant with Community legislation". Finally, MEPs hope there will be the possibility of "voting in 'supervised e-voting stations'" during the European elections of 2004.
