MIDDLE EAST: Appeals to Valencia Summit

Brussels, 19/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Several human rights organisations are calling on the Valencia EuroMed Summit of 22/23 April to concentrate on human rights, and more specifically on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The EuroMediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) is calling on the EU to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel and for the signature of the Association Agreements with Algeria and the Lebanon in Valencia to provide an opportunity for pointing out that the human rights clause of Association Agreements has to be respected. The EMHRN is also calling for a mechanism t ensure human rights are respected in framework of the EuroMed partnership - joint workgroups, promoting human rights as a major task of a new EuroMed Foundations, etc.

Amnesty International is calling for an immediate UN investigation into what happened in Jenin and has published a special report "which shows how the Algerian authorities are using the "counter-terrorism" argument to justify continuing massive human rights violations".

The Parliamentary Association for Euro-Arab Co-operation has called on all governments to save "the buried alive in Jenin".
