18/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - "Powell, Ivanov, Solana and Aznar must now go to Jerusalem and Ramallah. It's only together that they can provide credibility" to the prospects for a resumption of the peace process in the Middle East, said the CDU member of the EP, Elmar Brok, Chair of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, in a press release. While considering that at next week's ministerial meeting in Valencia, the EU should urge Israel into dialogue (see yesterday's EUROPE p.5), Mr. Brok considers that the indications Prime Minister Sharon gave to Powell on the withdrawal of the Israeli army "were so vague", and the efforts of Chairman Arafat at stemming terrorism "so unconvincing" that such an initiative by the Americans, Europeans, Russians and the UN was more than ever necessary.
