Brussels, 18/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - As the Convention prepares to meet for the third time, European NGOs from the social sector launched their Social Platform. This was presented on 15 April in Brussels to the European Convention. This contribution will be asking Convention Members to wok towards a "true (un) Conventional Europe that would ensure respect for fundamental rights as the basis of democracy; development of integrated policies which encompass social, environmental and economic aspects and support the role of civil society organisations, particularly those which represent the interest of people experiencing poverty, exclusion and inequality." The Social Platform is also urging the Convention in the spirit of social justice and fundamental rights to address the following themes: 1) Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual by incorporating the Charter of Fundamental Rights into the Treaty; 2) Promote individual well-being by amending the Treaty to focus on the fight against poverty and social exclusion, sexual equality, anti-discrimination measures, protection of public health, family and children's rights and the development of integrated policies to ensures sustainable development; 3)Promote greater participation of Every European in decisions that influence people's future and the future of new generations by creating a Treaty article on the mandatory consultation of civil society. (This article is entitled: New Thinking of a New Europe and is available in English and French on: http://www.socialplatform.org ).
