Powell mission not over, observes Solana - Talks with Greek Government

Athens, 18/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Answering questions on the Middle East, the High Representative for Cfsp, Javier Solana, declared in Athens (where he was Thursday and Friday for talks with the Greek Government): "Secretary Powell did all he could, at this stage,, but we must continue to support his mission. It's a mission that is not over (…) I believe we knew he would not perform miracles in such a short period".

Developments in the Middle East were among the subjects raised by Solana, Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Foreign Minister Georges Papandreou, in Athens on 18 April.

With Defence Minister Yannos Papantoniou, Solana discussed, in particular, the prospects for an EU-NATO agreement on the use by the Union, for EU-led peacekeeping missions, of Atlantic Alliance assets. You may recall that, so far, Greece has been unable to accept the agreement concluded on the subject with Turkey following British and American mediation.
