Brussels, 17/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has postponed adoption of the reform proposals for the common fisheries policy, scheduled for 17 April (see EUROPE of 28 March, p.8). To stick to the scheduled timetable, the services of Commissioner Franz Fischler had, however, altered some elements of the proposals so as to take account of observations made by the French and Spanish Commissioner. However, given the sensitive nature of the issue (reservations still remain on the subjects of reducing catches and the reduction in public aid to the renewal and modernisation of fleets), the Commission prefers to wait for the results of a forthcoming meeting of chefs de cabinet (specially devoted to the issue) to put the subject of the College's agenda. Some members of the EP's Fisheries Committee, and especially its chairman, British Conservative Struan Steveson, strongly deplored these delays to the seven draft regulations.
