17/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Philippe Busquin condemned, on Wednesday, the destruction of an experimental crop of modified colza last week in Alost, in Belgium. Recalling that such trials were in compliance with Belgian and European legislation on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Mr Busquin, who spoke of ignorance, deplored all acts of this kind and stressed that "the freedom to carry out research is a fundamental value in democratic societies".
