Commission continues its inquiry into mobile telephony sector

Brussels, 11/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Commission's competition services continue their open inquiry in July 2001 concerning roaming services in the EU, mainly with regard to prices invoiced to consumers who use their mobile phone abroad (see EUROPE of 12 July, p.12). The services of Commissioner Monti suspect operators may have come to mutual agreements in order to fix high prices, and a Commission spokesperson said on Friday that procedures against certain operators, mainly in Great Britain and Germany, could be launched "during the year". The inquiry also looks at the prices invoiced for fixed telephone calls towards a portable phone as well as ADSL techniques (rapid Internet access). In this connection, a statement of objections had been sent last December against Wanadoo Interactive (subsidiary of France Telecom), suspected of fixing its prices below the cost of the services, which can constitute abuse of dominant position, but "it is not to be ruled out that other procedures will soon be initiated", said the Commission.
