Members of Parliament call for Israel to join EU

Brussels, 11/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the end of a conference last week organised by the Transnational Radical Party on "Israel in the European Union", Members of the European and Israeli Parliaments, along with intellectuals and exponents of civil society from both Israel and Europe adopted a working document for a campaign to "support the goal of achieving full Israeli membership of the European Union", a demand long supported by the Radical Party (see EUROPE of 4/5 March, p.5).

The signatories of the protocol resolve to "support publicly, and take concrete steps to further the goal of achieving full Israeli European Union membership, each according to his or her skills, resources and abilities"; "co-operate and communicate with each other, irrespective of political, social and/or religious beliefs"; and "gather in Jerusalem" to draw the attention of the public, the Knesset and the European Parliament to the initiative. (The document adopted by the Lista Bonino MEPs and their Israeli colleagues, along with the conference report, can be found at: http://www.radioradicale.it. )
