Geneva, 05/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday in Geneva, the TRIPS Council of the World Trade Organisation put forward two proposals forward that should make the Declaration of Doha on access to medicines in developing countries become effective. In order to have cheaper generic medicines, these countries can obtain compulsory licences but many of them do not have the necessary infrastructure to produce them. In order to resolve this problem, the EU has proposed importing these medicines which will be manufactured elsewhere. This authorisation could be passed by way of amending the TRIPS Agreement or making a declaration on how it is interpreted.
