Brussels, 05/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption last Thursday of the own-initiative report by British Green member Caroline Lucas on the impact that transport can have on health, the European Parliament called on the Commission to apply to transport policy the treaty provision (Article 152) that imposes a high level of protection for human health. It invites the Commission to pay particular attention to the specific vulnerability of cyclists and pedestrians. It proposes that, when the Community makes a financial contribution to long distance rail or road projects in or between Member States (in the context of trans-European networks, the Cohesion Fund and ISPA), the Commission should encourage the latter, on one hand, to identify traffic flows likely to be deflected from urban areas. On the other, it should foresee appropriate provisions to reallocate road space that has become free in urban areas to sustainable transport, encompassing public transport, cycling and those on foot.
