26/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - "If he begins like this, Gianfranco Fini is like a bull in a china shop", exclaimed Pasqualina Napoletano (Democratici di sinistra), who commented on the remarks made by the representative of the Italian government at the Convention on the future of Europe. Mr Fini, she quotes, had said that "the unifying link of the European Union should be religion and the constitutional text (to be adopted by the Convention) should only contain a few points approved by everyone and referring explicitly to the Graeco-Roman and Jewish-Christian tradition". Such an attitude would mean that Turkey would not have the right to join the EU one day, which does not correspond to the decisions of the Helsinki Summit, said Ms Napolitano. She went on to say that, if negotiations are not yet underway with Ankara, it is not because of religion but because of Turkey's failure to comply with the Copenhagen criteria, "beginning with human rights".
