Brussels, 29/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the EU Council of Ministers adopted without debate the new regulation defining the terms and conditions for granting Community structural aid in the fisheries sector. The regulation strengthens international action for the prevention and elimination of unlawful, undeclared and unregulated fishing. It bans the granting of public aid for the permanent transfer of fishing vessels towards certain third countries that have been identified by the relevant regional fisheries organisations as countries authorising fishing in a way that compromises the effectiveness of international conservation measures. These provisions also strengthen the condition for withdrawal of capacities linked to the entry of new capacities in segments where the annual targets have not yet been reached.
