New York, 29/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Iraq has approached the Spanish EU Council Presidency with a view to a high level dialogue on sanctions imposed by the United Nations against Baghdad since August 1990, states Reuters of New York. Iraq is under the threat of US military action if it does not authorise resumed inspections by UN experts with regard to its programmes for weapons of mass destruction. Last week, Iraqi Foreign Minister Tarek Aziz affirmed during a visit to Moscow that the inspections could resume if all elements of the UN Resolution No 687 on sanctions are respected, resolutions that also provided for the creation of a denuclearised zone in the Middle East. In addition, Iraq announced in New York on Monday that it would allow a human rights investigator into the country.
