Brussels, 29/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Marco Pannella, leader of the Radical party and MEP, carried out an act of "civil disobedience" on 28 January by turning up at Stockport police station (Manchester) in possession of cannabis and hashish. Marco Pannella, who wanted to express his solidarity with MEPs Chris Davies (Liberal Democrat) and Marco Cappato (Lista Bonino), who will be appearing before Stockport Magistrates Court on 29 January for having carried out similar actions. A press release indicated that the fact that Mr Pannella was not arrested created a precedent in the Trans-national legalisation campaign. Marco Panella declared that just like Socrates in Athens, faced with an unjust law, which they wanted to break in order to create a better law. Prohibition was criminalising and incited crime, he said. He asserted that this battle for freedom didn't recognise borders and was a non-violent action in favour of law, rights, democracy and tolerance. Panella said that the police shared these values as they suffer for having to enforce laws they knew were unjust.
