American counter-terrorism chief says in Brussels that detainees at Guantanamo will be treated with "humanity"

Brussels, 29/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - "The United States respects and will respect the Geneva Convention, and human rights", declared the American Co-ordinator for counter-terrorism, Francis X. Taylor, regarding the detainees in Guantanamo, speaking to a few journalists in Brussels having met members of the EU Political and Security Committee (Cops), and having been to NATO on Monday. The detainees, of whom it has been stated over and over again that the United States considers them as illegal combatants and not as prisoners of war "are being treated with humanity, as is always the case with the United States", he said. Mr. Taylor spoke to the members of Cops, whom he already met early October, of the international anti-terrorism campaign. "It is not because we have succeeded militarily in Afghanistan that we can say we have resolved the problem of terrorism", he warned. "We shall return tomorrow to co-operation between the EU and the United States in this field.
