Commission publishes second EU Scoreboard on State Aid

Brussels, 09/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has just published its second EU scoreboard on State Aid. The first version released in July 2000, together with the Register of State Aids, constitutes one of the new information and analysis instruments implemented by the Commission as part of its State Aid policy. Like last year, the "Scoreboard" includes five sections: an overview of the State Aid situation in Member States, an analysis of where aid is directed, information on State Aid control procedures, the effects of State aid on the Internal Market and a forum for Member States to present their own Stare aid policy. Commissioner Monti commented that, "The positive reaction to the first Scoreboard has encouraged the Commission in its efforts to further increase transparency and to raise awareness for the need of State aid control." The Commissioner called on Member States to continue their efforts in re-targeting and reducing this aid, in accordance with what had been decided at the European Councils of Lisbon and Stockholm, whilst continuing to apply a rigorous control policy. The new edition focuses on the incidence of state aid in the research and development field. The newt versions should emphasise the subjects such as aid to small and medium-sized enterprises and regional aid. The Commission intends to publish two scoreboards every year, the next is due out in the Spring. The second version is available on the Commission's web site of DG Competition at the following address: http: //europa.eu.int/comm/competition.
