Association Agreement to be initialled in Brussels on Thursday

Brussels, 09/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and the Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, will initial a new EU-Lebanon Association Agreement in Brussels on Thursday. On Wednesday, a Commission spokesperson said it was an important step in the direction of setting up a huge EuroMediterranean free trade zone. This 8th EU/Lebanon Association Agreement (which we will be returning to) concentrates on political dialogue, human rights, concessions in agricultural exports to the EU for Lebanon, significant cuts in tariffs on agricultural products, long-term (12 years) free trade in industrial products, trading legislation (competition, anti-dumping, subsidies, intellectual property and public procurement), rules of origin, economic co-operation, respecting international laws on money laundering, fighting organised crime, drugs and migration.
