Economic and Social Committee calls for "children-friendly" tag on European sites

Brussels, 29/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption on Wednesday of the report by Ann Davison on the protection of children on the internet, the European Economic and Social Committee (ESC) calls for the creation of a Community "children-friendly" label for European internet sites. The Committee acknowledges that parental surveillance to prevent children coming across violent or "unhealthy" sites is all very well, but that it cannot be carried out all the time. It considers, moreover, that voluntary classification has not given results and so all internet sites must receive compulsory classification. "The ESC's report is important", said Ms Davison, "because as an official EU institution we can formally ask the European Commission to set to work on this. The Commission has already tackled a number of internet issues - for instance regarding education - but children's safety must not be left out. There is a pressing need for internet service providers to be legally obliged to protect children surfing on the internet".
