Brussels, 29/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has launched a formal investigation procedure concerning EUR 219 million that Germany is planning to provide for Infineon Technologies SC 300 GmbH&Co. The aid was notified in May 2001 under the Multisectoral Framework on regional aid for large investment projects. The project comprises the construction of a new plant in Dresden producing DRAMs (Dynamic Random Access Memory) with a storage capacity of 512 megabits or more. Germany asserts that the project will lead to the creation and safeguard of 1700 direct and 1303 indirect jobs. The commission will assess the aid from three aspects - the capacity and market situation in the industry, the number of jobs directly created and the beneficial impact of the investment on the economy of the region.
