Brussels, 29/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Environment Bureau (EEB) launched a new campaign on Tuesday for "environmental tax reform" attended by the former European Environment Commissioner Yannis Paleocrassas. The 18-month campaign in EU Member States and candidate countries will concentrate on four main targets - replacing by 2010 (aiming to achieve fiscal neutrality) 10% of income tax revenue with natural resource use taxation; scrapping any subsidy that could damage the environment; tightening up energy efficiency and energy savings policies; and introducing tax incentives for protecting the environment. The EEB also wants to get the 1997 proposal back in the limelight (on introducing an energy tax - this has to be decided unanimously but has been blocked by several Member States under the UK's leadership). The EEB's campaign will reinforce the Belgian Presidency's plans to make a last ditch attempt to get agreement on the energy tax proposal.
