ITC finds substantial prejudice in steel products import case

Brussels, 23/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission said it was "disappointed" with the decision by the US authorities to put some of the serious problems facing US industry down to steel imports, more specifically for 16 product categories where Europe is one of the main US competitors. A Commission spokesperson said that the Commission did not share the US's view, and that if the United States were to decide to take measures to block steel imports from the rest of the world, the Commission would probably have to take the case to the World Trade Organisation since it does not believe that there is reason to block imports. After agreeing that a substantial prejudice does exist (the first step in the investigation launched in June 2001 under Section 201 of US trade legislation, the International Trade Commission (ITC) now has two months (until 16 December) to put forward "remedies" to President Bush, who will in turn have two months to rule on any safeguard measures to be taken (quotas, customs duties or tariff quotas) to the benefit of US industry.
