Network for settling cross-border disputes out-of-court

Brussels, 17/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, Commissioner David Byrne and the Belgian Presidency launched the pilot phase of the European Extra-Judicial Network (EEJ-Net) for the out-of-court settlement of consumer disputes with suppliers in another EU country, Norway or Iceland. Each country has set up a central contact point or clearing house, where consumers can get information and aid in accessing existing out-of-court settlement schemes. EEJ-Net is complemented by FIN-NET, the existing out-of-court complaints system for financial services. Simultaneously with the launch of EEJ-Net, a new European Consumer Centre for Belgium was opened in Brussels by Charles Picqué, Economics Minister, and Magda Aelvoet, Consumer Protection and Public Health Minister.
