Brussels, 17/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Margot Wallström, Environment Commissioner, will be in Slovenia on 18 and 19 October. The aim of this first official visit by an Environment Commissioner to this country is to discuss the environmental aspects of enlargement with Slovenia's political decision-makers, environmental organisations, students and school-children. Margot Wallström is to congratulate Slovenia on progress made in the field of the environment during the accession negotiations (Slovenia is the first candidate country to have closed the "environment" chapter on negotiations on 29 March) and urge the government to keep to this track, mainly by improving the country's administrative capacities as regards the implementation and effective application of environmental legislation. The Commissioner will meet Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek, Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, European Affairs Minister Igor Bavcar and Environment Minister Janez Kopac, as well as the Slovenian MPs and pupils of a school in Ljubljana, who have finalised an ecological programme for children of the school.
