GENERAL NEWS / (eu) capital migration/tobin tax

03/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - In an interview published on 3 September by the German magazine Der Spiegel, the Nobel Prize-winner for Economics James Tobin welcomed the fact that his proposal of three decades or so ago is winning growing support, namely for the introduction of what has become known as the "Tobin Tax" in order to slow down the flows of capital speculation (see EUROPE of 1 September, p.4 on the disagreement between the French and German Finance Ministers, Laurent Fabius and Hans Eichel, on this subject). Professor Tobin commented that he was delighted of course, but felt that most of the support for the tax came from the wrong side (the anti-globalisation movement). Prof. Tobin explained that like most other economists, he favoured free trade, the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO which are all under attack from the anti-capitalist movement. Professor Tobin added that the movement was abusing his name.
