Brussels, 03/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - During a visit to Brussels, Ketumile Masire, the facilitator for the Democratic Republic of Congo (former President of Botswana), was received on Monday by Poul Nielson, European Commission for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid. Talks covered the various aspects of inter-Congolese dialogue launched on 24 August after the preparatory conference in Gaborone (Botswana). In the spirit of the declaration published by the Union Presidency (see page 4 and EUROPE of 31 August, p.2), the Commissioner welcomed the common determination shown by participants to put an end to the war and to pursue their efforts towards national reconciliation. Mr Masire expressed his thanks for the support given by the Commission to the process that will continue on 15 October, during the meeting in Addis Abeba. The spokesman for Poul Nielson told the press that the Commission funds this inter-Congolese dialogue with EUR 1.9 million and plans to remain in close contact with the Congolese authorities throughout the process for which the Gaborone conference only lay the foundations. "The large part of the work remains to be done", he said.
