Commission takes Ireland, Great Britain, France and Spain to Court

Brussels, 20/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is continuing its proceedings against four Member States that have incorrectly applied directives concerning the internal market:

  • Freedom of establishment of lawyers: The Commission has decided to take action before the Court of Justice against France, Ireland and Spain for not having applied Directive 98/5 by the deadline of 14 March 2000. The directive states that: 1) lawyers may exercise their profession in a Member State other than their own under their original professional title; 2) the host Member State must take into account the experience acquired on its territory.
  • Insurance groups: The Commission has decided to refer the United Kingdom to the Court regarding the directive on supervision of insurance undertakings in an insurance group. The directive was to be implemented from 5 June 2000 and its provisions applied to the financial period beginning 1 January 2001.
  • Product liability: The Commission has sent a reasoned opinion to Ireland, which did not comply with the deadline for application (4 December 2000) of the directive that extends the directive on "product liability" to farm produce and to game products.
