European Economic and Social Committee calls for adoption of one stop procedure by Member States

Brussels, 20/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - One stop and subsidiary protection of the asylum seekers, which come in addition to the Geneva Convention (rights of refugees) and makes a reference to the situation in each (family conditions, culture, country of origin etc.), this is the main proposal formulated by the European Economic and Social Committee by adopting with a majority (with 2 against and 16 abstentions) during its July plenary session, the opinion entitled "Towards a common asylum procedures and uniform status, valid throughout the Union, for persons granted asylum". The rapporteur being Dario Mengozzi (group of diverse activities, Italy, the co-rapporteur Pariza Castanos (workers group, Spain).

In its opinion, the Committee feels that lists identifying the "safe countries of origin" and the "safe third countries" is not desirable because they are of a nature to subordinate the inclusion and exclusion of countries to political criteria and constitute a excessively ridged and badly suited instrument for the taking into consideration of the asylum seeker's personal situation. The fact that the asylum seeker comes from a country where the human rights situation is considered satisfactory must in no way, insists the Committee, lead to the rejection of the asylum seekers assessment procedure. To make this procedure more fair and effective, the Committee calls for the so-called "one stop shop" procedural path to be followed by all the Member States.
