Guidelines of White Paper on future of transport "unrealistic" say European haulage companies

Brussels, 20/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The guidelines contained in the White Paper on European transport policy in 2010 "sets down unrealistic bases for achieving sustainable development", declares the International Road Transport Union (IRU) in a press release. According to haulage companies, the communication that the Commission adopted on Wednesday (see EUROPE of 19 July, p. 8) rests on "doubtful hypotheses", notably presupposing that there may be an "uncoupling between growth in transport and growth in GNP without harm for the economy and that the railways could compensate for additional demand in the transport of goods". Especially, the hauliers believe that "the considerations relating to infrastructure are possibly one of the more confused aspects of the strategy", by aiming at both a reduction in congestion and a transfer of revenue from road to rail. "How to provide an adequate road infrastructure that meets current and future needs, if the revenue of road transport is transferred to rail?" the IRU wonders.
