THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/european commission

28/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Jacques Delors has declared that recent attacks on President Prodi were unacceptable. The response by Delors arose during an interview in Brussels where he was attending a meeting of the "Laeken Group", which had been convened to discuss the consequences of the Irish "no vote" on the Treaty of Nice. According to the German news agency vwd, Austrian Social Democrat, Hannes Swoboda has distanced herself from comments attributed to her during an interview in the weekly Stern magazine where she had spoken of Romano Prodi possibly resigning (see EUROPE 27 June page 5) but still maintained that he should exercise a stronger leadership. VWD also reported that it was an open secret that German Social Democrat Dagmar Roth-Behrendt was dissatisfied with the Mr Prodi's progress but was not so naïve to call for his resignation as this would require a majority vote which was at present not the case.
