28/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European parliamentarian Miet Smet (EPP, Belgium) suggested, on Wednesday, the creation of a European television channel to reduce the divide existing between the Community institutions and the EU citizens. Why should I watch the American channel CNN to know what is happening during the Gothenburg European Summit, she wondered during a press conference in Brussels. According to Mrs Smet, the European channel, which each person could follow in their own language, should broadcast European news and weather, information on road traffic in Europe, programmes for consumers as well as entertainment (sport, games, etc.) of a continental nature. The parliamentarian called on the political world to consider this idea, without excluding that the channel may then be managed by the private sector.
