Brussels, 28/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Party of European Socialists (PES) with Robin Cook as its President has decided to outline some of its policy development plans to certain PES leaders. These plans will touch on some of the challenges facing Europe in the future. These include: - A press release indicated that Robin Cook would take responsibility for the status of European policy and rethink strategies for combating the 'apathy' of the electorate in the European Union and candidate countries; - the Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson will lead a project on sustainable development with the aim of producing a social democratic contribution for the Rio + 10 Summit next year; - German Defence Minister Rudolf Scharping will be responsible for developing ideas on the CFSP with an emphasis on conflict prevention; - EU enlargement issues will be dealt jointly by the Chair of the of the Finnish SDP Parliamentary Group Antti Kalliomäki and Hungarian Socialist Party leader Làzló kovacs; - the Spanish and Polish Presidency members of the PES, Trinidad Jimenez and Tadeusz Iwinski, will push forward ideas on immigration issues; - Food safety and agriculture will be the remit of former French Minister for Agriculture Heneri Nallet and a senior figure from the Dutch Labour party; -Former Italian Premier Giuliano Amato will be responsible for developing PES relations with both Russia and the United States while Greek Defence Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulous will assume responsibility for Mediterranean policy; - The political network in south East Asia will remain the responsibility of Dutch MEP Jan Marinus Wiersma, whilst Swedish Deputy Premier Lena Hjelm-Wallén will oversee activities of the European Forum for co-ordinating democracy building projects in Eastern Europe.
