Brussels, 13/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The social dimension must play a prominent role in the EU's strategy for sustainable development.
This is the message sent to the Gothenburg Summit by the Platform of European Social NGOs, which calls for: 1. the strategy for sustainable development not simply focusing on issues relating to economic or environmental issues, that it considers people as "citizens with all the rights which a social concept of citizenship implies", and that it should integrate commitments set out in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights; 2. implementation, monitoring and assessment of the strategy taking place in the context of a structured civil dialogue, including full consultation with social NGOs.
